Benioff and Weiss to Create Series of Star Wars Movies

This went COMPLETELY below my radar... The creators of the television version of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, are to write and produce a series of Star Wars movies separate from the Saga movies and the trilogy that Rian Johnson is going to create.

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

No release dates have been set for the new films, and there have (thankfully) been no sightings of White Walkers around Lucasfilm.

Yeah it wasn't a big announcement and overshadowed by the fact Benioff and Weiss are also creating five new pilots for Game of Thrones spin offs.

Makes me wonder with so much on their plate, how much time will they have to develop this SW project.

Wow, they're going to be busy that's for sure. But if they can keep the quality bar at a decent level I'll be very happy. There's a lot coming up to watch.

Not with a franchise called Marvel they haven't. It is releasing two films within a space of two months and four within seven months. With SW, they are trying a similar formula just a little slower.

I agree with Pep, as long as the quality as good but I do feel a bit worried... Anyway, there's a rumor that Tom Kane (who is best known for having voiced Yoda in a number of video games and in The Clone Wars as well as Admiral Ackbar in TLJ) has stated that there are nine more Star Wars movies in various stages of development: Twitter

There have been no reports of it being cancelled yet. I presume they are a little busy by GOT being released in April.

I think we won't hear anything more until after we hear how well Episode IX did.

Disney's Bob Iger confirmed at Disney's Upfront event that the trilogy to be released between 2022 and 2026 will be that by Benioff and Weiss.

Considering how disappointed GOT fans were with most of the last season, it will being interesting to see how they write in the SW universe without a book for source material.

I never watched GOT (always wanted to) but the discontent is tangible! What else has D&D done?

They done some other things, but not much. It's pretty much GoT that got them SW. I am a bit nervous about that. If anything, I'd think a SW TV show would have make sense since they've been showrunners for the Thrones show. I don't know that being successful showrunners on tv translates to being great for movies, especially (as thepepgal mentioned) since they won't be adapting an already written work. They didn't do so well operating on their own with season 8 of Thrones.

This IS true and came straight from Bob Iger: Variety

The Laeta Kalogridis could be working on those movies, on Johnson's or it could be a rumor.

It throws the movie schedule into doubt as they were due to release the first of these in 2022.

It's a possibility, but we may now have Feige directing that project. And if The Mandalorian does as well as I think it will we could see the triumvirate of F's! Feige, Filoni and Favareu!
3 F's is about all I have left to give for this franchise.....
