Fan Fiction: The Secret History of Boba Fett - Pt. 3: Payment

Post by Lord Tesla »

Without further ado,

III: Payment

The farmer was alone out on the sand. No surprise. He had no family, and no farmhands. His nearest neighbor was a good 70 kilometers away. The sound of the ship brought his head up.

Fett set Slave I down, and exited.

“Is that you, Fett?” Hoder Moops called out, waving his floppy farmer hat.

“I told you I’d be back,” Fett said. He pulled off his helmet, and tucked it in the crook of his left arm. The right he extended to Moops, offering his hand.

Moops took and shook it. “It is you! How long has it been?”

“Three years. Didn’t you believe me?” Fett said.

“Well…” Moops let the word hang in the air. “I wanted to.”

“I told you it would take a while.”

Moops put his hat back on, and motioned toward the well leading to his hole-in-the-ground dwelling. “Come on, come on in and tell me all about it.”

Fett nodded and followed the old man.

Inside, they sat at an old stone block that served Moops as a table, a glass of water before each.

“Where did you go after you left?” Moops said.

“Mos Eisley, like I said I would.”

“Did you find your ship—is that it out there?”

“That’s it, but it was gone by the time I got there. The rebels took it. Impounded it. Tried to sell it off with a lot of scrap to fund their war effort, not knowing what they had.”

“Damned rebels, tearing up the galaxy and making life miserable for people,” Moops said.

Fett nodded in agreement. “They’ll end like all the rest, tyrants.”

The old man grunted assent. Then he got a gleam in his eyes.

“So, did you steal it back?”

“No, I bought it at auction.”

If anything, that seemed to amaze the farmer more.

“That was about a year ago.”

“And before that, and since?”

“From Mos Eisley, I went to friends who could finish patching me up. After that, I needed recovery time. Then I had to get to work, earning a living, restoring my rep. Hard work.”

“Of course,” the farmer said, and sipped at his water. He’d likely spew it back out if he knew the bloody swath that chore had left in the Outer Rim.

“But, I got it done, and reclaimed my ship. Since, then, I’ve been working my way back toward Tatooine.”

“Just to visit me?” Moops said.

“To honor my debt,” Fett said. He pulled a pouch from his belt and put it on the table between them.

Moops looked from the pouch to Fett.

“Debt?”

“You saved my life. I’m a bounty hunter. I know what a life’s worth. That’s the price of mine, due the man who rendered the service.”

The old man hesitated.

“Take it.”

Moops took the bag and opened it. His jaw dropped.

“It’s a small fortune!”

“Remember, I know what a life’s worth.”

“But,” Moops began to protest.

Fett stood up. “It’s yours.”

“But I can’t—“

Fett put his helmet on. “Yes, you can. Accept it. With my thanks.”

He left the old man sitting at the table, trying to make sense of it all.

Back on the surface, Slave I shivered in the heat-distortion. Fett trotted across the sand, into the cool hold of his ship.

Five minutes later, he was back in space, and setting course for the Ooda Bor, Coreward from Tatooine.

With Slave I safely in hyperspace, he had time to think.

"Last debt paid. Now to settle scores," he thought.

Okay, that's Chapter Three. 593 words. (I think it's the longest of them.) Only...I think four more chapters to go. Thanks for your attention. Questions and comments welcome, of course.

Thanks, Javen! I'll try to keep up about a chapter a day. They're all written, it's jus a matter of squeezing in the time to get them pasted in, formatted right, and posted.

After I run out of those, though, there's apt to be something of a lull while I think of something else.
