Re: Last Movie Watched

Agreed. I have a lot of discs piled up I'm eager to get to (whether or not the prove worth it in the end of course remains to be seen): F. W. Murnau's Nosferatu , Metropolis , Blade Runner 2049 , several Marvel films backlogged... Remind me...you are a fan of Blade Runner or no? Look forward to hea...

Re: Last Movie Watched

Holy crap, I think Alien: Covenant is still the last film I've seen. You have to fix that, LT. Many worthier movies you need to get in. My last movie might have been Hostiles , at the theater. Really solid western with excellent performances from Christian Bale, in particular, and Rosamund Pike. I ...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

In a way, this shows that again the writers have rolled back the character development to their first appearance like Han and Leia. Though as you've both pointed out, its been haphazard and without the requisite thought. A lot of the callbacks just felt superficial to me, and without the depth/emot...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

Yoda's appearance was one of the things that felt out of place and written by someone who hadn't watched the OT. And it was "crazy" Yoda that he used as a test for Luke. Yoda did not act that way before or since. And the puppet looked awful and nothing like either in the OT or PT. People ...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

Thanks for the post! Some comments below. I agree with Luke in that him returning wouldn't make the First Order disappear. The propaganda of Luke being able to do more, meant that had he returned that hope from the universe would have died. I agree that Luke returning wouldn't make the First Order d...

Re: Last Television Show Watched

I caught the premiere of that. Must say I was unimpressed. Too dark--I mean, literally, the thing was lit like the inside of a refrigerator six feet under ground--too gruesome, and utterly lacking in sympathetic characters. I'll tune in this evening for Episode 2, but a second chance is all it gets...

Both seasons of Carnivàle . A fantastic series! Too bad it was cancelled... I started this and for some reason didn't continue. I need to get back to that. Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

I don't think anyone's posted a link to this article, but I thought it was an interesting take on some of the events in TLJ: http://bigshinyrobot.com/60239/luke-skywalkers-arc-star-wars-last-jedi/ Not sure it will change anyone's minds about the quality of the storyline, but it might give people so...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

Well, the Star Wars novelization mentioned ducks and dogs, but I can forgive that given its age. The Aftermath -trilogy was far worse with its references to snow globes, hamsters, direct references to Earth mythology and modern American slang. The writing is also atrocious: She's spinning, once mor...

Johnson has also said, in an interview with Collider , that Kylo Ren wasn't lying: So, here we have a conflict between Rey's vision/memory of her parents apparently blasting off from Jakku, with Kylo's true statement (according to Johnson) that her parents were nobodies who were buried in a unmarke...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

I couldn't agree more with the posts about the poor quality of the new books. I hated the Aftermath books. I thought Tarkin was quite good. Currently reading Phasma and I'm struggling to keep going. I don't know what it is with the present-tense, simplistic style but I do not like it. I also agree ...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

I've quite frankly never seen Abrams concluding much of anything. He opens up his mystery box whose content can be interpreted any which way, but he never closes it. And I think you're quite right: As I wrote after first having watched the movie, I felt as if Johnson didn't like some of Abrams's id...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

In my opinion this was the weakest plot of the SW movies. While Johnson tried to echo The Empire Strikes Back with the Raddus in place of the Falcon , I think it failed completely and felt to me as a boring version of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica pilot 33 (in which the plot made more sense ...

Things I liked: 1. Porgs They were cute. I think their screentime was just right. 2. Carrie's performance It's been hard for me to see the Leia/Carrie of the OT. No specific criticisms of her performance, though. 3. Rey's character development I like what we got. I really hope they do something mea...

I did, too. That was a nice touch. On the other hand, I found it odd that he referred to a "Jedi" training Darth Vader, not mentioning Ben/Obi-wan by name.

I have many questions but the one that I keep coming back to is if Snoke was the one that connected Rey and Kylo so they could communicate with each other prior to the throne room scene....which he admits he was. Who connected them together at the end when Rey is moving the rocks so the resistance ...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

In hindsight I have determined that I don't care about who Snoke is or why he came to power. Clearly he was a bridge to support Kylo's growth from Luke's student to Supreme Leader of the First Order. Abrams and Kasdan obviously expected whoever picked up the story in Episode VIII would expand on Sn...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

Think about the scenes in TLJ that feature Snoke and try to imagine any backstory being presented whatsoever. Is he going to tell Hux or Kylo his life story out of nowhere, especially considering they probably know most of it? Or, okay, he tells Rey, and we're suddenly inundated with a buttload of ...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)

I like Poe getting taken down multiple pegs throughout the movie and his subsequent growth from it. Hubris and gumption can only take one so far and he had to learn that the very hard way. Classic hero's journey stuff. I didn't get any sense of Poe getting taken down a notch. He was so understandin...

Does that mean that it was good? Unfortunately no. Didn't much care for the movie. Saw it Thursday and Friday night. Here are some thoughts: I don't mind humor in these movies, and quite enjoyed much of the humor in TFA. But the first scenes with Hux turned him into too much of a joke, which then made it hard as the movie progressed to feel much sus...

Hopefully gonna see Thor Ragnarock tonight with my son. I really liked it, and I'm having a tough time deciding whether I preferred it or GOTG2. Definitely the best of the Thor trilogy (though I know some found it too jokey and almost like a spoof of the previous Thor movies). A little bit too long...
