Re: Last Television Show Watched
Not unless you enjoy being bored and wasting your time. After the big build-up to last season's finale, they pulled back, way back this season, and it was mostly sub-standard monster-of-the-week episodes, at least a couple of which had ideological axes to grind. I know I've commented on The X-Files...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
For TLJ, I was unable to get to the theater for more than one viewing, although I absolutely wanted to because I felt that it required multiple viewings to absorb it all, but fuck....I've watched JUSTICE LEAGUE three times since I've had it and I'm nearly more tempted to watch that again rather go ...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
I bought it on Wednesday here in the states and I haven't felt an urgency to watch the film itself, which I found very strange, considering I only saw it once in theaters and knew it required multiple viewings for me to get a real good handle on it. That bothers me....hell, I watched the extremely ...

6-7 pages?!?!? Eagerly awaiting your essay.Lord Tesla wrote: ↑March 29th, 2018, 3:40 pmSaw the film Tuesday afternoon, as soon as I could clear time to spin the disc. I have six or seven pages of notes I'm working up into a proper post for the proper thread.
If anyone is interested. If not, well, that's cool, too.

After the first, 6-episode event series, I felt done. Sounds like there's no reason for me to jump back in.

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
So where is everyone buying the DVD? Which store has the best exclusive content? I think Best Buy has an exclusive steelbook, so if I was buying (I'm not), I'd probably get that one. I think Walmart has interchangeable covers and Target...I think like a collector's book/booklet of some kind. Not su...

Re: Last Movie Watched
And I still haven't seen another film. Drat. I saw London Has Fallen on tv last night. As far as action thrillers go, pretty solid. At the theater over the last month, I've seen: Game Night - Didn't find it as funny as most seemed to and didn't think they milked nearly enough out of the premise bef...

Re: Star Trek - From TOS to Discovery and Beyond
Although I liked a few of the MU episodes, I think it was far too early: One must learn to know the characters a bit more. I also found that the portrayal of the MU was inconsistent with the rest of the shows (when was people from the MU shown to be sensitive to light?). Would it surprise you that ...

Re: Star Trek - From TOS to Discovery and Beyond
And the last episode of the season was a rush job... There were a few episodes I liked, but overall the series is... uneven is a kind word for it. They should have set it at least 50 years after Voyager instead. Yeah. I thought the series found more stable footing in the middle with episodes 5 thro...

Re: NOVEL: Thrawn
I have the kindle version, but haven't started it yet. I loved his original trilogy, and hope Thrawn comes across as the same character. Reviews were mixed from what I recall, though I don't remember what specifically was being criticized. Maybe the opposition for him being somewhat weak?

Re: Star Trek - From TOS to Discovery and Beyond
So I dived back in this weekend with a binge of episodes 4 through 10 (plus the corresponding "After Trek" episodes). I was pleasantly surprised given my low opinion of the first three episodes. SPOILERS below. I tried to figure out spoiler tags, but apparently don't know what I'm doing there. Episo...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
You ain't wrong. I know this entire trilogy is partly a farewell to the original trilogy heroes, but I still see them getting far too little screen-time. Han dominates the film pretty much and even he didn't show up until the 40 minute mark (IIRC). Leia has a small role in the film and doesn't show...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
I'm not sure I'm going to get the DVD either. It's so strange that I've only seen this flick 2 times in the theater. Hell, I saw TPM over a dozen times in the theaters and it had its faults. I saw TLJ 3 times, which for me is a lot, and almost saw it a 4th time but just had no enthusiasm/interest t...

LIfe. It was too much like Alien. I liked it, it had its good points, but I couldn''t not think of the similarities to Alien while watching it, and I was not able to suspend that feeling even the 2nd time watching it last night. But still, on its own it was a well made movie and the acting, script,...

Holy crap, I think Alien: Covenant is still the last film I've seen. You have to fix that, LT. Many worthier movies you need to get in. My last movie might have been Hostiles , at the theater. Really solid western with excellent performances from Christian Bale, in particular, and Rosamund Pike. I ...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
In a way, this shows that again the writers have rolled back the character development to their first appearance like Han and Leia. Though as you've both pointed out, its been haphazard and without the requisite thought. A lot of the callbacks just felt superficial to me, and without the depth/emot...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
Yoda's appearance was one of the things that felt out of place and written by someone who hadn't watched the OT. And it was "crazy" Yoda that he used as a test for Luke. Yoda did not act that way before or since. And the puppet looked awful and nothing like either in the OT or PT. People involved w...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
Thanks for the post! Some comments below. I agree with Luke in that him returning wouldn't make the First Order disappear. The propaganda of Luke being able to do more, meant that had he returned that hope from the universe would have died. I agree that Luke returning wouldn't make the First Order d...

Re: Last Television Show Watched
I caught the premiere of that. Must say I was unimpressed. Too dark--I mean, literally, the thing was lit like the inside of a refrigerator six feet under ground--too gruesome, and utterly lacking in sympathetic characters. I'll tune in this evening for Episode 2, but a second chance is all it gets...

I don't think anyone's posted a link to this article, but I thought it was an interesting take on some of the events in TLJ: http://bigshinyrobot.com/60239/luke-skywalkers-arc-star-wars-last-jedi/ Not sure it will change anyone's minds about the quality of the storyline, but it might give people so...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
Well, the Star Wars novelization mentioned ducks and dogs, but I can forgive that given its age. The Aftermath -trilogy was far worse with its references to snow globes, hamsters, direct references to Earth mythology and modern American slang. The writing is also atrocious: She's spinning, once mor...

Johnson has also said, in an interview with Collider , that Kylo Ren wasn't lying: So, here we have a conflict between Rey's vision/memory of her parents apparently blasting off from Jakku, with Kylo's true statement (according to Johnson) that her parents were nobodies who were buried in a unmarke...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
I couldn't agree more with the posts about the poor quality of the new books. I hated the Aftermath books. I thought Tarkin was quite good. Currently reading Phasma and I'm struggling to keep going. I don't know what it is with the present-tense, simplistic style but I do not like it. I also agree ...

I've quite frankly never seen Abrams concluding much of anything. He opens up his mystery box whose content can be interpreted any which way, but he never closes it. And I think you're quite right: As I wrote after first having watched the movie, I felt as if Johnson didn't like some of Abrams's id...

Re: Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (SPOILERS ALLOWED)
In my opinion this was the weakest plot of the SW movies. While Johnson tried to echo The Empire Strikes Back with the Raddus in place of the Falcon , I think it failed completely and felt to me as a boring version of the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica pilot 33 (in which the plot made more sense ...
